# D11 — Multilingual Structure

Assessment specification built from the Phase 5 D10 drafts. It defines languages, URLs, hreflang, translation workflow and localisation rules. Nothing is translated, published, redirected or activated. Source-specific rewrites, customer evidence and legal details stay pending.

## 1. Language model

| Language | Role | URL pattern |
|---|---|---|
| English (en) | Master — authored and approved first | `/<path>` |
| German (de) | Counterpart — translate all approved English after finalisation, with back-end approval workflow | `/de/<path>` |
| French (fr) | Retained historical content at current addresses for SEO; no new translation until the client activates it | current /fr/... addresses unchanged |

`x-default` points to English. Topic sites: Five topic subdomains keep their own language strategy; corporate hreflang never points across domains.

## 2. Coverage

| Role | Nodes |
|---|---|
| English master | 93 |
| French retained (historical) | 32 |
| German counterpart | 67 |
| German legacy source | 37 |
| **Total** | **229** |

67 English pages have a reserved German counterpart. German legacy sources without an English pair stay under review; French pages keep their current addresses with self-referencing hreflang only.

## 3. hreflang and canonical rules

- Each page canonicalises to itself; no cross-language canonicals.
- Only between published, approved pages; reciprocal and self-referencing; nothing is activated by this assessment.
- Helper fragments (`…-this-is-not-display`) are excluded and recommended noindex.
- French is not clustered with English or German, as no equivalent translation exists.

## 4. Translation workflow

1. English draft
2. English client approval
3. German translation
4. German internal review in back-end approval workflow
5. Publication approval

Keep untranslated: Product and trademark names (IBM ELM, DOORS Next, DOORS Classic, Rhapsody, Perforce P4, P4 Plan, ReqIF, EVOLVIA); Topic-site names; Code, file names and standard identifiers (e.g. MC/DC).

## 5. Localised components

- **Forms and booking:** One shared form definition with localised labels, consent text and confirmation messages; enquiries record page language and topic for routing (addresses Phase 1 CNV-03); booking fields unchanged.
- **Language switcher:** Header language switcher shows only languages that exist for the current page; otherwise links to that language home without implying a translation.
- **Dates, numbers:** locale formatting per language (de: 02.11.2026, 1.000; en: 2 November 2026, 1,000).
- **Legal pages:** German Impressum and Datenschutzerklärung require legal review; [PENDING — legal details].

## 6. Pending boundaries

- [PENDING — source-specific English rewrite, customer evidence and legal/process details remain open; no translation starts before English approval]
- Customer evidence remains placeholder until supplied and approved.
- D6/D7 structure is unchanged; language annotations are a companion file, not a sitemap rewrite.

The language register lists every node with role, counterpart, canonical and planned hreflang.

**Phase 6 complete — confirm to continue.**
